The Screening Process

Resources

The Church’s Vulnerability

  • Programs of Assistance for Elders in their Own Homes – more private, less opportunity for supervision
  • Community of Trust – Because people trust they can be more easily taken advantage of or let their guard down, i.e. “it could never happen here in my own home where I have always felt safe.” Or ”I have no need to worry about someone coming here from the church”
  • Ignorance of Facts – We are becoming more aware of this danger
  • Lack of safeguards – Establishing policies, procedures and screening mechanisms is something that we seem to take a long time to put into place
  • Easy Access - Faith-based organizations are eager to accept volunteers and there are few requirements for those wishing to serve
  • Need for More Volunteer Workers as the Aging Population increases.
